Let’s look at myself.
This is a link to my current Resume!
Since High School, I have dreamed of becoming a concept artist. Creating has always been my passion. I cannot get enough art books!
In my first year of university, Roman, one of my tutors, asked us what we wanted to do after we graduated. Some said they wanted to be designers or illustrators. I said I wanted to be a concept artist. The first thing he said was, that’s something I haven’t heard from someone in a long time! His advice is to keep honing my artistic skills and to learn software like google sketch up, For lighting. He also said that Concept Art would be difficult. But he was confident in my abilities!
Funnily enough! I know how to use google sketch up due to having access to it at high school. And I've also never ceased honing my artistic abilities!
I used to enjoy watching the behind-the-scenes of my favourite movies and games. These would highlight the outstanding work of animators, modellers, and concept artists. I'd also noticed a significant difference between the terms Concept artist and Visual development artist. They both appear to be the same job. I've been researching this to see what the difference is, and I've discovered that it varies depending on the studio hiring. They are either entirely distinct or a hybrid of the two. I've seen more Visual development artists titles, which are more prevalent in the animation industry, where there is a greater emphasis on tone and mood, depending on the specialization. Where concept artists are traditionally represented in film and video games.
I've followed talented concept artists such as Trent Kaniuga, who is well-known for his work with Blizzard, Riot, and his comics Creed and Twilight Monk. He has a YouTube channel and speaks from the perspective of someone who has been doing this for a long time! He emphasizes the significance of genuinely wanting to do what you want to do. That Skills can be acquired along the way. He even goes into some of the other things that a concept artist at a studio like Blizzard can do. I believe I look up to people like him as master concept artists!
In Saying all of this let’s go down the list of my resume and see if I meet what is here!
First, I must say that I have two years of experience as a Graphic Designer! So, I have the critical thinking skills required to get through the situations that concept art can bring!
I have a Bachelor's degree in design (visual communication), so I am definitely qualified for this position.
Is it true that I have a portfolio? Yes, I have a design portfolio, as well as a website that highlights my artwork. However, I do need to create a concept art portfolio.
Basically, based on what I see, I appear to be following this nicely, but I am lacking in the 3D software department. I prefer to work in 2D! However, I believe I could still learn this. "Willingness to learn new software programs and tools" is stated. I'm currently working on skill-share and dabbling in C++ and Unreal Engine.
However, based on this, I'll push myself to learn Blender because it's a lot more accessible to me right now. Although Maya and Z-brush are industry standards, I believe skills can be transferred!
I think I'll be able to pull it off! After all, it is my dream! I also believe I can effectively learn what I need to learn! After all, I suppose all that is required is for the right person to read this.
I'm motivated, capable, and eager! I'm not afraid of the hard work or criticism. It's just a part of the job.
At the end of the day, if you want something bad enough, you will fight for it! I had to battle my way into university. I'm confident I can do it again.
Now I'd like to ask you, "What did you get out of this?" and what should I do next?
