Dear 2024, An Open letter and reflection of 2023

Dear 2024,

I decided to approach my year-end reflections in a new and unconventional way. Instead of the usual internal dialogue, I chose to engage in a metaphysical conversation with the upcoming year, seeking a deeper and more meaningful connection from the start.

Reflecting on 2023, I'm reminded of a poignant Jim Carrey quote: “You Can Fail at What You Don't Want, So You Might as Well Take a Chance on Doing What You Love.” There's a sense of failure lingering within me as this year didn't unfold as envisioned. The fear of navigating a year without employment or a stable foundation has materialised, forcing me to confront the anxiety of facing the new year without a predefined role.

This year has resurrected familiar themes from the past—self-worth, self-doubt, mental health, delay, and hope. Despite not being an entirely negative experience, it felt like a series of unfortunate events, a sentiment shared by many grappling with unforeseen challenges and uncertainties.

The theme of the year became survival, and there were times when I wanted to withdraw into myself. Following a layoff in February, I embarked on the challenging journey of securing a role in my dream industry. However, repeated rejections and ghosting from recruiters took a toll on my mental well-being. The struggle was real, but so were the moments of unexpected encouragement, such as positive portfolio reviews.

While not all rejections were detrimental, a particularly harsh interview experience led to a mental breakdown, only to discover it was a blessing in disguise as the company faced a subsequent layoff.

Networking has been a standout aspect of my year, presenting numerous opportunities to attend various events that left a lasting impression. Launch parties for games like Redfall, Starfield, and Assassin’s Creed: Mirage were particularly thrilling. Participating in PAX for the first time and experiencing SXSW in Sydney were highlights that allowed me to connect with both heroes in the industry and individuals who would become cherished friends. Looking forward, I am eager to attend more launch parties, PAX, and SXSW, with the hope of doing so alongside a company or with sponsorship.

The gaming front has been exhilarating, with several standout titles making it to the top of my list. Alan Wake 2 stands out as a mind-bending masterpiece, while Dredge offered an addictive Lovecraftian fishing journey that captured my heart. Meeting the CEO of Black Salt Games at PAX added a personal touch to my gaming experience. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom provided a breath of wild magic, and Starfield, a Bethesda RPG, made me feel as though I had a job through its engaging quest line. Hogwarts Legacy, despite stirring controversy in the Potter community, fulfilled a long-standing dream of immersing myself in the wizarding world.

Beyond gaming, I've done a lot of reading this year, both physical books and audiobooks. Engaging in John Romero's autobiography, "Doom Guy," revealed intriguing parallels with my own journey. Exploring fantasy through "The Cruel Prince" in the Folk of the Air series proved addictive, especially delving into political intrigue. Reading a historical epic by Aussie author Peter Fitzsimons about Ned Kelly sparked thoughts of how such characters could fit into an Assassin’s Creed game. Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods became a standout favourite, rekindling my love for the series.

Currently engrossed in "Divine Rivals" by Rebecca Ross, a tale of two rival journalists finding love through a magical connection, I'm immersed in a captivating narrative. The upcoming reads, including "Fourth Wing," "A Court of Thorns and Roses," and "Go Tell the Bees I Am Gone," promise to keep me busy with literary exploration.

Returning to my childhood love, Doctor Who, has been a source of joy. The anticipation of the 60th anniversary episode, akin to the excitement of an Assassin’s Creed game with Ezio, has elevated my enthusiasm. The new Christmas episode, featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, added a fresh perspective, leaving me excited for the series' future, with teases of beetles and Jane Austen making it even more intriguing.

Now, what do I wish or hope for in 2024?

I set out on the uncharted journey of 2024 with the help of the leaders in my field, who are all sources of inspiration in their unique roles. In the spirit of Lorne Lanning, the visionary behind Oddworld Inhabitants, I aspire to channel creativity that pushes boundaries and captivates audiences.

Much like Alannah Pearce, whose dream of working at Sony Santa Monica ignited a path of passion and commitment, I envision a trajectory that mirrors her dedication to creative excellence.

In the footsteps of Troy Baker, a master in the realm of voice acting, I seek to master my craft with versatility and emotion, bringing characters and narratives to life.

I feel motivated to carve out a niche in the industry and contribute to initiatives that change the face of interactive entertainment because of Laura Beitzel, the Senior Content Creator and Community Manager at Ubisoft.

Adding to this tapestry of inspiration is Melanie Wickham, the co-founder and executive producer at Preymaker, whose creative leadership fuels my desire to contribute to groundbreaking projects.

And then there's David Robles, the APAC Marketing and Communications Director at Bethesda Softworks, whose strategic brilliance fuels my desire to navigate the intricacies of the gaming realm.

In 2024, my wish extends beyond professional growth; it encompasses a desire to embody the qualities that make these heroes truly remarkable. May my journey reflect the resilience, creativity, and passion that define the careers of Lorne Lanning, Alannah Pearce, Troy Baker, Laura Beitzel, Melanie Wickham, and David Robles.

My wish for 2024 extends beyond a predetermined path—it's a desire to embrace the diverse opportunities this industry offers. Whether immersed in the vibrant community at Ubisoft, navigating the intricate worlds of Bethesda, adding creative brilliance to projects at Preymaker, joining the iconic realm of Sony Santa Monica, exploring the visionary landscapes of Oddworld Inhabitants, or contributing to the impactful narratives of Rockstar Games, I am open to the adventure that lies ahead.

Here's to a year where I not only carve my path within the industry but also grow into a professional who embodies the spirit and excellence of those who inspire me.

I am approaching the year with a very open mind, wanting to see what will happen!

Let's hope for the best and make it a good one!

Love,

Brendan Quinlan
